On Four-Year Anniversary, Education Officials Tell Congress ESSA is Working
December 10, 2019
As reported in Education Week, in a letter to Congress, “a group of state and local education officials, teachers’ unions, and others” report the significant progress they are making under the Every Student Succeeds Act,” noting that the law “could lead to significant advances in addressing the achievement gap between different groups of students and in improving schools.” The letter makes it clear to Congress that many of ESSA’s supporters during its initial drafting as a bill are still behind it—including teachers and parents groups as well as state legislatures. While ESSA’s authorization technically expired on its four-year anniversary—”the same date as the letter—no one expects that lawmakers will take up reauthorizing the law any time soon.”
