Forum Featuring African-American Educators in Florida Focuses on ESSA’s Impact on the Community
October 30, 2019
A town-hall-style meeting—themed “Lessons from the Past”—held at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale brought together policymakers and stakeholders for a discussion of ESSA and how the law “holds schools accountable for how students learn and achieve, while also providing an equal opportunity for students who get special education services.” ESSA project coordinator Elizabeth Primas was on hand to explain “what this law means to the Black community.” Panelists then discussed how lessons and insights from the past could help provide “a blueprint for a more productive future in education.” Ultimately, the meeting “highlighted the parts of ESSA that have the greatest potential to impact students and provide tools for meaningful conversations concerning children’s education.”
