Five States Getting Report Cards Right

Cindi Williams, co-founder of Learning Heroes and a principal at HCM Strategists, writes in The 74 about the vital importance of making sure parents have access to clear and honest information about both how their child or children are doing in school—and how well schools are serving their child or children. Williams notes that that though there is often a “Grand Canyon-size gap between what parents are told about their children’s learning and what the school knows to be true,” there is both good news and a path forward. “Five states have embraced the new federal requirement under the Every Student Succeeds Act to create easily understood school report cards as an opportunity to give parents complete, usable information about their child’s school,” she writes. “Awareness is the first step toward advocacy, and there is no better advocate for a child than his or her parent.”
