Rep. Roe on Empowering Teachers and ESSA
May 11, 2018
U.S. Representative Phil Roe authored an opinion piece recently on the importance of recognizing hardworking teachers and the positive impact they have on the classroom, as well as his role in crafting ESSA. He praised the work of Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam who sought to ensure “education as a top priority” for the state and writes that “education cannot be solved by a national, one-size-fits-all approach,” and that “each state, school district and student are different, and local administrators, teachers and parents — not the federal government — should make decisions based on what’s best for their students.” With ESSA, he says, the law presents teachers with many promising opportunities. The law mandates that stakeholders, including teachers, are meaningfully engaged as states make decisions about enacting their approved accountability plans.
