Los Angeles Finalizes $14 million Foster Student Plan

October 3, 2019

Los Angeles might soon stand out as an early leader in figuring out how to overcome barriers to fulfilling ESSA’s promises to foster students, reports Susan Abram for the Chronicle of Social Change, as the district recently approved a five-year, $14 million transportation plan for foster students. “The plan approved by Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) – by far the largest of Los Angeles County’s 80 school districts, with 40 percent of the county’s students – helps bring it into closer compliance with” ESSA, which mandates “that local educational and child welfare agencies provide transportation for foster youth to their home school.”
