Feds Give Green Light to Florida ESSA Plan

Education Week’s Alyson Klein declares, “It’s official.” After a long and at times contentious process, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has (finally) given Florida’s ESSA plan the thumbs up. That means all state plans (as well as those from Puerto Rico and DC) are now approved. “Today marks a significant milestone in the implementation of this important law,” DeVos said in a statement. “As we move into the next phase, we look forward to working with states as they bring their plans on paper to life and use the flexibilities afforded in ESSA to innovate and improve educational opportunities for all students.” However, some advocates are criticizing the Department for approving a plan, stating that it will be damaging to English-language learners.
