LA Business and Education Groups Express Concern with Draft ESSA Plan
February 15, 2017
Nine Louisiana business and education groups – including Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, the Urban League of Greater New Orleans and the Southern Poverty Law Center – expressed their concern with the way public school letter grades are calculated in Superintendent White’s draft ESSA plan. The plan would change school performance ratings from a system reliant on “high-profile test results” to one that includes annual academic growth. White’s plan has been endorsed by the Louisiana Accountability Commission, but critics argue that basing 25 percent of a school’s letter grade on growth is too much.
