Delaware Gov. Jack Markell and New Mexico Secretary of Education Hanna Skandera Applaud High Standards in Their States
November 1, 2016
The Collaborative for Student Success hosted a tele-press conference featuring Delaware Gov. Jack Markell and New Mexico Secretary of Education Hanna Skandera. Both Markell and Skandera discussed how high standards are working in their states, and addressed ESSA as an opportunity for states to improve education. Gov. Markell commented that while he, as a governor, is happy that the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) give states more flexibility, he cautioned that “with that flexibility, states have a responsibility to remain committed to the success of our students.” Similarly, Skandera explained, “Under ESSA, states have been given broad new authority over the steps they take to produce better outcomes. These findings send a clear message that it’s a mistake to retreat from high standards or go back to low-quality tests.” Additional coverage can be found in the Delaware State News, Albuquerque Journal, and EdSource.
