Incorporating Authentic Parent Engagement in State Plans under ESSA

Widmeyer Communications published a guide, “Incorporating Authentic Parent and Family Engagement in State Plans under ESSA,” which explains how parents and families should properly engage Local Education Agencies (LEA) while they are working to write new plans under ESSA. They have developed a set of guidelines to help parents and families authentically engage with LEAs, which include:

  • Identifying and recruiting a more ethnically diverse array of participants to represent all aspects of the community.
  • Preparing participants to speak what they truly think, give honest feedback and expect not to be criticized.
  • Executing engagements on a day and time that makes it easy for parents and families to participate.
  • Staying engaged with participants through finalization, dissemination and implementation of the plan.
