Chiefs for Change Submit Public Comments to Dept. of Education

July 21, 2016

Chiefs for Change submitted their public comments on the proposed ESSA regulations to the Dept. of Education. The organization commends the proposed rules for balancing state and local flexibility while maintaining federal “guiderails” to ensure the new law benefits students. Members have also voiced support for the Dept. of Education’s proposed accountability indicators, evidence-based intervention, and single summative rating for school performance. While the comments largely agree with the proposed rules, Chiefs for Change recommended that the Dept. of Education:

  • Delay the recommended timeline for accountability systems until the 2018-2019 school year
  • Account for students transitioning out of subgroups by requiring “a 4-year cohort high school graduation rate to identify schools in need of comprehensive support and improvement”
  • Lessen the reporting requirements for already overburdened LEAs and SEAs.
