Civil Rights Groups to DeVos: Florida Plan is Terrible and Must Go

November 9, 2017

“Several civil rights and education advocacy groups have a simple message for Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos,” reports Education Week’s Andrew Ujifusa. “Just say no to Florida’s Every Student Succeeds Act plan.” In a letter sent to Secretary DeVos, more than a dozen civil rights groups argue that the plan is “a bad idea,” and “doesn’t follow ESSA because it doesn’t offer state tests in languages other than English.” They also say the state’s proposal to exclude English-language proficiency in its accountability system is a big problem, and claim the plan “doesn’t appropriately identify schools with low performance for student subgroups.”
