“Widening the Horizon” with innovative assessments

CCSSO’s Innovation Program Manager Adriana Martinez says that for years, “states have taken the lead in exploring how to create better ways to assess students.” Now, under ESSA, states “have the opportunity to innovate in assessment in different ways, including through a new innovative assessment pilot.” Through the Innovative Assessment and Accountability Demonstration Authority included in ESSA “states can apply to develop a new type of assessment.” Thus far, four states—including Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, and New Hampshire—have told the U.S. Department of Education they intend to apply for the pilot.
