Virginia Cancels Federally Mandated Standards of Learning Testing with DOE Approval
March 30, 2020
The U.S. Department of Education granted permission to the Commonwealth of Virginia “to cancel federally mandated Standards of Learning tests for the 2019-2020 school year.” Under the Every Student Succeeds Act, states are required “to administer annual assessments in reading and mathematics from third grade to eighth grade and at least once in high school” as well as “testing in science in elementary, middle and high school at least once.” The Virginia Department of Education will be “exploring other options” for the canceled SOL tests during an April session of the General Assembly.
