Study Finds Professional Development for Teachers Lacking

November 23, 2016

Frontline Research and Learning Institute found that only 20 percent of professional development and training for teachers meets the definition of “high-quality professional learning” under ESSA. In order for ESSA requirements to be met, professional development must meet six conditions: 1. not a stand-alone, short-term workshop; 2. intensive; 3. collaborative; 4. job-embedded; 5. data-driven; and 6. classroom-focused. Frontline encouraged state leaders to “take up the mantle of high-quality professional learning” and use research to make “transformational improvements.”
