New York School District Waiting for ESSA Designation
February 19, 2020
The Greater Johnstown School District in New York is waiting on its ESSA designation, which is expected soon. Nicole Panton—the district’s director of curriculum and professional development— presented an overview of the educational accountability system to the Board of Education, saying “the Johnstown school system could be identified in 10 subgroups.” According to Panton, the “Johnstown district has seen improvement in absenteeism.” Last year, Johnstown High School, where Panton presented to the School Board, was designated as being in good standing. According to Panton, New York has an “accountability system that is built on equity, not equality.”
