Miami University Professors Discuss Importance of School Climate Under ESSA

In a joint opinion piece for The 74, Amity Noltemeyer, associate professor in educational psychology, and Andrew Saultz, assistant professor of educational leadership at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, discussed the importance of school climate under ESSA. Noltemeyer and Saultz argued that ESSA can provide states the “opportunity to recalibrate accountability systems to include measures beyond student test scores.” They found that by “measuring and reporting on school climate,” districts can participate in “improvement efforts that positively impact student and teacher outcomes.”
