Incorporating Physical Education into States’ Plans
August 18, 2016
The American Heart Association sees ESSA as a vehicle for states to “include PE in their plans for a fair, equitable and high-quality education.” AHA’s 2016 Shape of the Nation found “few states [with] a minimum time requirement for PE” while “some schools use PE as a form of punishment.” The association recommends “at least 150 minutes of PE per week in elementary schools, and 225 minutes per week in middle and high schools” as a way to improve and even create a “healthy lifestyle” for students.
