Idaho Schools’ Plans to Improve Hispanic Student Outcomes Vary Greatly
February 9, 2020
According to Idaho EdNews, “Latino students in 11 Idaho schools were so dramatically behind their peers last year that state education officials demanded plans for change.” In some cases, students were “trailing more than 35 percentage points in English language arts or math.” However, in reviewing schools’ improvement plans, EdNews and the Idaho Stateman found that five out of 11 plans “didn’t set specific goals for Hispanic student achievement,” and none of the districts “specified consequences if schools don’t help Hispanic students improve.” While the state requires improvement plans to meet federal requirements “enforcing the details of those plans [is left] to the local districts.” The state “doesn’t collect, monitor or even read these plans.”
