American Principles Project Experts Raise Concerns over Dept. of Ed’s Promise of Returning Local Control Back to States

In an opinion piece, Emmett McGroarty and Jane Robbins, senior fellows at the American Principles Project, argued the Dept. of Education may not be returning as much local control to the states under ESSA as originally promised. The piece examines how states like Delaware, Nevada, and New Mexico have been subject to “providing a slew of additional information before their mandatory ESSA state plans can be approved.” McGroarty and Robbins raise concern that DeVos’ comments on approving state plans as “a good and important role for the federal government,” really means the “new sheriff looks a whole lot like the old sheriff.”
