Schools that Promote the Arts See Increase in School Attendance
September 9, 2016
Janice Gouldthorpe, executive director of New York’s Genesee Center for the Arts & Education, praised the implementation of arts education through ESSA. She argued schools that promote the arts see “students attend school more often, parents and families engage, dropout rates decrease, and grades increase.” ESSA views the arts as part of a “student’s well rounded education.” Gouldthorpe noted that access to the arts “is not equitable in communities across our state and the country,” and that many schools and districts “offer limited opportunities for students to participate in the arts.”
