ESSA Expected to be Top Priority During Lawmakers’ 2017 Sessions

Education Week notes that, thanks to ESSA, a wave of “volatility of education politics could crest” over the next few years. Michelle Exstrom, education program director for the National Conference of State Legislatures, said that state legislators are more “engaged [than] we’ve ever seen.” The piece notes that due to increased state control and the implementation of accountability systems through ESSA, a majority of lawmakers’ 2017 sessions will be “dominated” by these issues. With this shift in control, the average voter may not initially understand ESSA, but with the implementation of new local policies, “that could change quickly.”
