DeVos Questioned on the Hill: Do Some States’ Plans Violate ESSA?
May 22, 2018
This week, Secretary DeVos returned to Capitol Hill Tuesday to appear before the House Education and Workforce Committee and discuss her agency’s priorities. CNN’s Juana Summers reports that DeVos “was pressed by Virginia Rep. Bobby Scott — the committee’s top Democrat — over whether she had approved state education plans that violate [ESSA]. Scott repeatedly pressed DeVos on plans where school grades don’t include subgroup performance, suggesting that allowed states to ignore disadvantaged groups.” DeVos maintained that the plans she approved complied with the law.
