Oklahoma Schools Facing Different Accountability Pressures Under ESSA
November 14, 2017
Oklahoma schools are held accountable differently under ESSA. While “the 95 percent attendance rate” under previous federal and state statutes “made schools focus on the number of students who showed up each day, it failed to draw any attention, or offer help, to the number of students who are chronically absent.” ESSA, on the other hand, “will focus on chronic absenteeism, or students who miss 10 percent or more days of school, for any reason, in a given school year.”
