Change to Modified Diplomas Worries Oregon Parents
October 12, 2017
Oregon parents are concerned “about a change to modified diplomas could risk transition services.” Under ESSA “all states to use one high school diploma—the one that a “preponderance” of students earn—to count as their graduation rate.” State Senate Bill 20 was drafted to match graduation requirements with ESSA, but some parents with disabled children are concerned “they will have to pick getting a diploma for their child or getting them the services they were promised until age 21.” According to a special education advocate, this “would make those students’ dreams of attending college or getting a job much more difficult.”
