NEPC’s Indicators for Support, Safety, and Respect in the Classroom

In a policy memo by the National Education Policy Center, William Penuel, Elizabeth J. Meyer, and Michelle Renée Valladares, of the University of Colorado Boulder, provided direction for schools when “selecting indicators” under ESSA that are designed to address “students’ perceptions of support, safety, and respect in the classroom.” Meyer called for the adoption of “measures that have a focus on equity” because they can help states “move schools in directions that promote positive, healthy, and high-achieving environments.”
