CCSSO Hopes Dept. of Education Will Move on from NCLB
June 29, 2016
In an interview with Education Week, Chris Minnich, executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers, voiced concern that despite the shift to ESSA from No Child Left Behind, the Dept. of Education will continue to attempt to enforce provisions of the old law. “There’s definitely some concern about enforcement of the old law as we move towards the new law,’ said Minnich, who noted the department has listened to states’ concerns over its proposed ESSA regulations. In response, Dept. of Education spokeswoman Takirra Winfield explained that “both laws contain the same requirement that states administer an annual assessment to all students in specific grades and subjects.”
