Local Superintendent Testifies Before HELP Committee
July 16, 2016
Dr. Gail Pletnick testified before the United States Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee last week on the importance of keeping ESSA implementation local. She argued that the proposed regulations are “unnecessarily rigid regulations that may hinder the very state and district innovation that we know is needed to serve our underserved students.” Overall, all the panelists expressed concerns about the Dept. of Education’s regulations to implement ESSA, including rules for school assessment systems, the timeline for action, and the perception that federal regulators would be allowed to override state decisions.
