Education Week highlights experts who are questioning the lack of personnel at the Dept. of Education to review state ESSA plans. According to Michael J. Petrilli, president of the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation, “having fewer staffers—and few with official Senate confirmation—means a lot of more work for each individual.” However, Elizabeth Hill, a spokeswoman for the Dept. of Education, “doesn’t expect the vacancies to have an impact on the plan review process,” and “any suggestion otherwise would be a misunderstanding of the process.”
