Does New Data Accurately Showcase Teacher Value?

Following the release of the Dept. Of Education’s final teacher preparation rules, Education Week examined concerns of “how the new requirements will be applied” and “how effective they will ultimately be.” Under the new rules, states are required to “rate teacher-prep programs annually” in the hopes that the date collected will “provide more transparency on program effectiveness and help improve training.” Some teacher groups are concerned that these data may not adequately showcase teacher value and will instead lead to “bad choices in order to meet numerical goals that don’t actually measure a teacher’s effectiveness, much less the quality of his or her training program.”
