More ELL Accountability Needed in Texas

February 13, 2018

Elda M. Rojas, executive director of multilingual programs at the Fort Worth Independent School District, is calling for increased accountability for English language-learners (ELLs) in Texas. Unfortunately, the state’s ESSA accountability plan doesn’t do the job. According to “an independent peer review of state education accountability plans (published at Check State Plans),” Texas’ plan “is weak in holding schools accountable for the success of English learners,” and the state’s school grading system “doesn’t specify how the progress of English learners will factor into a school’s overall grade.”
