Education Dive Examines ESSA’s Four Biggest Impacts

August 21, 2017

In a new post, Education Dive editor Roger Riddell writes on ESSA’s four biggest impacts. The law has shifted power back to districts and given states “more decision-making freedom” when it comes to standardized testing and “how they use their funding.” When it comes to testing, the “additional agency” under ESSA is supposed to foster innovation while de-emphasizing “harsh consequences if an experimental practice doesn’t work out as hoped.” ESSA’s approach to testing also encourages “the assessment of a wider array of subjects beyond just math and reading.” Beyond direct impacts on classrooms, ESSA will “also affect how researchers approach their study of education.”
